Building Civil Discourse in Social VR

Practicing civil discourse at a Leadership Summit

What does building a bridge to hard conversations about important things look like in social VR?

Social VR is more than a playground for creativity and connection—it’s a proving ground for the future of civil discourse. In these immersive spaces, we’re getting creative and playful in how to bridge divides, navigate challenges, and practice the art of meaningful conversation.

At BridgeMakers, we’re committed to empowering community builders with the tools to lead these conversations in their own virtual communities. Through workshops, courses, and live events, we’re creating a culture where hard topics don’t mean hard feelings and where understanding flourishes even amidst disagreement.

Upskilling for Civil Discourse: Venia Logan’s Course

One of our core advisors, Venia Logan, is leading a transformative six-month course on Facilitating Civil Discourse. This course is designed to give participants the confidence and skills to moderate challenging discussions while fostering empathy, curiosity, and mutual respect. From navigating polarized opinions to maintaining inclusivity in tense conversations, this course is a blueprint for building bridges in even the toughest spaces.

The Practice of Street Epistemology

Theory is vital, but it’s practice that truly makes the difference. That’s why BridgeMakers hosts weekly Street Epistemology events, where participants engage in friendly debates, starting with lighthearted topics like “Pineapple should be on pizza” or “Ice cream tastes better in bowls than cones.” These fun and low-stakes conversations lay the groundwork for diving into more polarized topics, like cultural norms, politics, or ethics.

The goal isn’t to win arguments—it’s to hone the ability to ask thoughtful questions, remain open to diverse perspectives, and explore beliefs collaboratively. These events simulate the challenges of moderating real-world discussions, providing an invaluable toolkit for community leaders navigating contentious issues.

Why Social VR?

Social VR uniquely blends the immersive intimacy of face-to-face interaction with the diversity of a global audience. Unlike traditional online forums, VR allows for a deeper sense of presence and connection. Seeing avatars interact in shared spaces makes it easier to remember that there’s a person—complete with their own story and experiences—behind every viewpoint.

At BridgeMakers, we believe VR can become a leading platform for rebuilding the art of dialogue. By equipping leaders with the skills to facilitate healthier discussions, we’re shaping a future where virtual communities thrive on collaboration, not division.
