Week 1 – Human on Purpose reborn

Week One of Bridge Makers HOP Group – A Journey Through the Multiverse

Hey Everyone! Here’s a journal of the first Week of Bridge Makers Human on Purpose (HOP) Group!

For those history buffs out there, Human on Purpose (HOP), has now existed in 3 social VR applications. First Altspace, then Horizon Worlds, and now VRChat! In this most recent VRChat rebirth, we journeyed through some incredible experiences that were deep, sometimes disturbing, and some even were surprisingly fun. We explored multiple worlds and stories that left us feeling connected, contemplative, and curious. The best part was that nobody could agree on any of the worlds being a fear-based or flow world. We all had different experiences, which means we could all learn many different viewpoints of the same spaces. I’ll tell you the overall vibes from my perspective:

Dancing in a Flow World

On our last night, we hit a flow world, an awesome and energetic space where some of us got our dance on. The vibes were unreal as we moved to the beat, letting loose and connecting with each other through the joy of dance. This world was all about going with the flow, losing ourselves in the moment, and creating an epic shared experience of pure happiness and connection. However, some travelers expressed a feeling of disappearing and being pointless in this space, and so after learning each others stories, we moved on to a different type of open world with a heavier theme.

Memorial World for a Brother, Soldier, and Friend

Next, we visited a memorial world dedicated to a brother, soldier, and friend who passed away a couple of years ago. None of us knew him personally, but we sat in a circle next to collage of his friends’ photos of him and talked about what death made us think about, especially how we’d want (or not want) to be remembered after we’re gone. This place really made us reflect on our own lives and legacies, and it brought out some deep conversations and connections. The overall consensus, we had found a fear or scarcity world, but by sitting in the sadness and feeling a little bit lost together, we all felt a little less alone.

A World Remembered with Affection

Then we headed to a world that’s no longer active with ongoing traffic, but is remembered with a lot of love by a nomadic leader who found this to be his favorite world to hold court and meet new people. This stop was a strong reminder of how the connections and memories we create can last beyond the life of a virtual world. The nomadic leader shared how the world naturally sorted people into two groups, those who were looking inward, and those wanting to connect outward, and it made us think about the communities we’re building and the legacies we’re leaving behind.

Appreciation Game in a Grey Plane of Nothingness

We wrapped things up in a grey plane of nothingness, finishing our journey with an appreciation game. In this empty space, we took time to notice and appreciate each other. This simple yet powerful exercise helped us feel grateful and brought us closer together as a group. We painted the nothingness with our hearts and built bridges across different voices and opinions, creating a colorful and connected space of belonging (see picture above!).
